Tour plan*

 

Day 1 - arrival & info

Arrival, information, planning and safety briefing. We get to know each other over a good meal and have a relax overnight stay at the wilderness camp.

Day 2 - tour start

Transport to the starting point. A 1,5 hour walk with a canoe trolley to the Lake Sølensjøen. Few hours of canoe paddling to the first camp spot.

Day 3 - Mount Sølen (1755m)

Nice long hike up Mount Sølen (1755m). The hike starts early and takes between 10-11 hours. Beautiful view over the surrounding area!

Day 4 - Fiskevollen

We paddle to Fiskevollen, Norway's largest and oldest inland fishing village. You will learn about the local history and culture.

Day 5 - nature reserve

We visit “Lille Sølensjøen”, the nature reserve in the north end of the lake. While enjoying the calm streams, small ponds, and wetlands, you will learn about the importance of nature reserves and national parks.

Day 6 - return and BBQ!

A last trip on the lake before returning to Femund Canoe Camp. A warm sauna awaits you before we will enjoy a barbecue with local food and share good stories by the camp fire.

Day 7 - departure

Breakfast and departure.

What is included?

Standard equipment: canoe (2p or 3p), paddles, life vests, watertight barrel (68L), canoe trolley, waterproof bag (8L), and a small shovel.

All transport during the days of the expedition.

Overnight stay at our wilderness camp, night before and after the tour.

BBQ (beginning and end of the tour).

Sauna on the last day of your tour.

Food package: food for the entire tour - 3 meals a day (allergies and preferences considered), including a trangia stove + gas, cup, bowl, cutlery and eco-friendly dish soap. Mainly based on fresh food and including a selection of premium local food products!

Travel to and from Norway/Femund Canoe Camp.

Tour package: 1p or 2p tent, sleeping mat, tarp + rope (NOK 685,-).

Fishing gear: Fishing rod + lure box (NOK 495,-).

Fishing permit can be bought on arrival. (+-NOK 400,-/week).

Those who wish to arrive earlier than the expedition’s start date, you are welcome to stay at the camp for one or more days. (+NOK 70,- per person per night).

Our team

Our tour guide will not only serve as your navigator through this magnificent landscape but will also share knowledge about local wildlife and the area itself. You will get to know the unique features of this Nordic region, from the mighty mountains to the secluded forests and swamps that surround Lake Sølensjøen.

Under the guidance of our expert, you will receive instruction in essential skills for thriving in the wilderness, covering everything from efficient canoeing and proper canoe packing to the art of making a fire. You will have the opportunity to learn to navigate through the area, as well as testing your fishing skills.

Since 2018, Vilde has been part of the Femund Canoe Camp team.

Born and raised in Engerdal municipality, Vilde has spent her life exploring the local wilderness, developing a passion for nature and wildlife.

With a bachelor in wilderness management and a master in biology, she enthusiastically shares her knowledge of local fauna.

Rick Noordink - host

Owner of Femund Canoe Camp since 2015. Rick is originally from the Netherlands, but moved to Engerdal and developed a passion for the local nature.

He's been helping visitors planning customized routes, offering local knowledge, while ensuring their safety.

 Packing

Remember to bring the following:

  • Sleeping bag (warm type)

  • Hiking backpack (large size – 80 L or more) and a small backpack

  • Tent + sleeping mat + tarp (or add our tour package to your booking)

  • Powerbank for charging your electrics

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses when the sun gets strong, especially on the lake.

  • Clothing: thermal underwear, sweater, and socks (wool is advised), windproof jacket, rain gear, hiking boots, lightweight shoes, (beanie/hat, cap, gloves, and buff), swimwear, towel, extra change of clothing.

FAQ

+ You have to arrange the trip to us yourself, what are the best options?

You can either reach us by car, or by taking the local bus. If you are flying to Oslo Airport and are planning to travel to Femund Canoe Camp by bus, make sure to book your flight in the morning so you will reach us in the afternoon or evening.

We can offer transport from the bus stop at Femund(senden) to Femund Canoe Camp, please contact us.

+ How do I get to Femund Canoe Camp from the airport?

There is a public bus service from the airport to Femund Canoe Camp with two to three bus transfers. It is also possible to take the train from the airport to Elverum and then take the bus from there.

We can offer transport from the last bus stop at Femund(senden) to Femund Canoe Camp, please contact us.

+ Do I need to pay in advance?

To secure your booking, a non-refundable deposit of 30% of the total tour cost is required at the time of reservation. The remaining amount must be paid no later than 60 days before the scheduled tour date.

+ Can I cancel my booking?

Yes, this is possible. Cancellations made more than 45 days before the tour starting date will receive a 70% refund (excluding the non-refundable deposit). Cancellations made within 45 days of the tour starting date are non-refundable.

+ What is the booking policy?

If you have a passion for outdoor activities and a love for nature, you are welcome to join. No extensive prior experience is required for this trip.

+ Do I need to be in good shape to participate?

During the trip, you will be active for several hours each day, so it's important to have decent fitness. But you don't need to be extremely fit to participate.

+ What is the age limit to participate?

Between 18 and 65 years old.

+ Any language requirements?

We are aiming for an international group of people. The spoken language during the trip will be English, so basic knowledge of English is essential.

+ What kind of clothing is important to bring?

The expedition takes place on a mountain lake in the Inland (“Innlandet”) region of Norway, where you should be ready for fluctuating weather conditions. Our journey will expose you to both chilly, rainy days and warm, sun-drenched moments. As we hike to the Sølen mountain (1755m), make sure to pack essentials like a windproof jacket, mittens, a beanie, and a woolen buff (also for the evenings) to stay cozy. Remember, the keyword here is 'WOOL'. Additionally, it's advisable to have a cap to shield yourself from the intense sun."

+ Where do we sleep during the entire stay?

We will be camping in tents throughout the entire stay, as well on the first and last day at the main camp. While at the main camp, we will have access to restroom facilities and a small on-site kiosk. For the rest of the trip, we will set up our tents in new locations each day.

+ How far do we paddle each day?

The length of paddling depends on weather conditions, but you should expect days when we paddle for 4-6 hours (including breaks). One of the days we have planned a hike to Sølen Mountain and therefore there will be no time to paddle that day.

+ Do I need travel Insurance?

Personal travel insurance is absolutely necessary when you are traveling. When choosing a travel insurance policy, you should be covered for at least medical expenses and emergency repatriation. Your insurance should also cover personal liability, personal belongings, cancellation, loss of luggage, and trip interruption. Please make sure to have your policy number and the emergency phone number from your insurance company.

+ What will happen if there are not enough participants for the trip?

We aim to have at least 4 participants. In the event of any changes or trip cancellations due to insufficient participants, you will be notified by us at least 45 days in advance. In this case the full amount including the deposit will be refunded.
